Some recent projects I’ve been working on, first the big project for February Make Art that Sells Assignment Bootcamp. We were all assigned groups with certain themes and colours, then were given the project to create a journal cover using those elements. Yum!
I combined my favorite things- lettering, loads of colour, brushy painty goodness, and flowers. I of course added copper foil effects, loads of textures, dots, swirls and twirls, and grunge to top it all off.
I’ve been rediscovering my love of more is more. When you get bombarded with those chic sleek minimalist flatlay images all over social media, super simple and laden with that certain shade of pink, and you’re all like, I need to be more like that! Branding! Lifestyle! High end! Luxury! But it never works and then you feel dismayed that you don’t fit in and you’re all like I suck, my work sucks, nobody likes me, wah wah wah.
You reach a certain point where you’re like, fuck it. I am me. I love detail. I adore colour. I love dots, and swirls, and texture, and did I mention colour already!? So imma gonna embrace that and just go with it. I don’t care if I don’t fit in. And it works. And it makes your heart happy. Ahhhhhhh! (the chorus of angels singing finally, you dingdong, you got it!)
So after I finished this project, I tackled my long lamenting website for my graphic design work side. I was really stuck, wheels dug deep in the stinky dark mud, trying to fit in somewhere but I wasn’t sure where, and it was not working at all. So I left it sitting until I finally realized dammit, just be me! Niche down, own it, pour some glitter on it, and do it already!
And I created my new logo…
Ahhh. I feel like I can breathe again.
Then I created a new illustration to go with, because this is me…
And now I want a hot green sparkly scooter.
So next, up is the full website and I’m doing it very differently this go around. I’ve been working away with some cool clients over the past month or two and have some funky new projects to share with you! The whole site will be finished, with a portfolio, info, and all that juicy, squishy goodness, before end of this month, but if you want to take a peek, here’s a link.
I am so grateful that I get to do this for a living and that some pretty amazing people trust me to create for them. It’s a total honour and thrill! For real. I’ve been in the design industry since 1991- omg- and fully self-employed since 2006 (though worked with freelance clients since the very beginning, some for 20 years+). I love illustration and design and love creating, it’s my life, and I’m here to stay, so might as well go for the gusto! With sparkles on top!
With much love and gratitude as always,
